Compost from FLORIS? Or compote?

With us, leftover food does not end up in the garbage, but in the composting plant

It has always been a challenge for the catering industry to handle all types of waste responsibly. We have been the proud owners of an Oklin composting facility for some time. The great thing about it is that we can use it to compost any kind of organic waste that is generated in our kitchen, but also any leftovers from an event.

The principle is simple: everything that is natural - including biodegradable disposable tableware, coffee filters or eggshells - goes into the machine. With the help of special microorganisms, everything we feed the composting facility is turned into compost within 24 hours. Strictly speaking, the waste is processed into a soil substitute with a high content of cellulose and, as a result, its volume is reduced by up to 90 percent.

The gardener's gold!
Anyone who thinks that FLORIS smells less of food and more of dung is wrong. The so-called gold of the gardener or the compost smells intensely of fresh malt and is particularly nutritious for the soil. It is not for nothing that this compost is called the gardener's gold. If you mix the compost in a 1: 1 ratio with top soil, a valuable fertilizer is created.

Fertilizing for a good cause
FLORIS currently manages up to 15 kg of compost per week. That's 30 kg of fertilizer. Even if the compost only yields around 10% of the original amount of waste, that is quite a lot. To fertilize our raised bed, for example, it is already too much. That is why we give away large amounts of the compost we produce to sustainable initiatives such as urban gardening or farming projects that rely on donations. A large part also goes to kindergartens and school projects. And our suppliers are always happy about the compost for their organic cultivation.

So far we are the first caterer in Germany to compost ourselves. However, we hope that our colleagues will also discover the composting plant as a practical waste disposer.
